Johannesburg - A shooting in Loper Avenue in Kempton Park, on the East Rand, earlier on Thursday arose from a hijacking, Gauteng police said.

"Kempton Park police were summoned at Loper Avenue in Spartan, Kempton Park, to an alleged shooting," spokesperson Captain Jethro Mtshali said.

"On their arrival it is alleged that the victim, aged 28, had just arrived at his work place in the above mentioned place on [Thursday] at about 05:55. As he was alighting from his vehicle, a white BMW, he was accosted by about four suspects. One allegedly forced him to the ground."

A struggle ensued and one of the hijackers fired a shot at the man, wounding him in his lower back. The man was taken to the nearest hospital, where he was believed to be in a stable condition.

"Later it was established that the vehicle was recovered by the police in Alexandria township in Johannesburg," Mtshali said.

"A case of hijacking and attempted murder is currently under investigation."

No arrests have been made.

Anyone with information on the hijacking was requested to contact police.
