Hikers rescued in Drakensberg

2011-01-05 18:21

Johannesburg - Three hikers were rescued on Wednesday near Cathedral Peak in the Drakensberg after flooding rivers blocked their route home, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife said.

"The three hikers had undertaken a hike from The Sentinel car park at the Royal Natal National Park to Cathedral Peak and were delayed by bad weather," said spokesperson Jeff Gaisford.

The hiking group from the Western Cape were able to inform Ezemvelo staff that they would be delayed by a day but on their descent to Didima holiday resort they discovered that two flooding rivers had blocked their route.

Ezemvelo staff and members of the mountain rescue team from the Mountain Club of SA hiked to a point as close as possible to the stranded hikers where they decided that a helicopter rescue was necessary.

A helicopter from Dragon Peaks airlifted the men and transported them to Didima holiday resort.

"The positive outcome of this incident serves to underline the vital necessity of fully and legibly filling in the Mountain Rescue Registers or hiking registers which then enable rescuers to act promptly and efficiently in case of an emergency," Gaisford said.
