Hillbrow tower soccer ball catches fire

2010-10-29 11:50
Johannesburg - A small fire was extinguished in the soccer ball of the Telkom tower in central Johannesburg, the city's emergency services said on Friday.

"Firefighters had trouble getting up there, but the fire was small and it was extinguished," spokesperson Synock Matabako told Sapa.

He said the fire may have been caused by cables around the tower and inside the fibreglass and steel ball. People contacted the tower's security around 06:00 on Friday when they saw plumes of smoke coming from the building.

"There are no injuries and no effects on the tower."

The 35-ton ball was put around the tower in March ahead of the Soccer World Cup.
