History blamed for few middle-class blacks

2012-07-06 10:08

Cape Town - The Western Cape's "tragic" history is to blame for its small black middle class, Premier Helen Zille has reportedly told a skills colloquium.

According to The Cape Times, she said border wars and colonial administrations had played a part in keeping black people out of the province.

"We have to face some hard facts. Black people and white people were not in the Western Cape over 300 years ago. As black people were migrating down the east coast, white people were arriving in ships down the west coast."

"... And that means, by extension, we have a very limited skills base among black people in the Western Cape, and that we need to change urgently."

Zille was speaking at a skills colloquium hosted by the Cape Chamber of Commerce in Cape Town.

Who cares... come up with a proper plan on how to develop those skills and stop talking nonsense.

      chris.gill.9849 - 2012-07-06 10:17

Agreed, I'm tired of talk of the past from politicians. Stop telling us what's wrong and start telling us how you're going to fix it.

      Michael - 2012-07-06 10:30

Shutup fwool...youre a troll who doesnt undestand the content but is willing to air your racist views at any point a white person opens their mouth

      oneant.kasinski - 2012-07-06 10:37

at least the DA IMPLEMENT their plans. Unlike the ANC who have libraries worth of plans while they sit with their fingers in their noses.

      Kevin - 2012-07-06 10:38

History isn't nonsense it is fact even if it does not suit your political ideaology. If you feel that your skills are not being used correctly or that you cannot find employment ask why. It probably has to do with Government and the policies that are being followed that fail to create economic growth and so employment. Any policy that makes employment difficult are also to blame, the fault probably lies with the National Government of the ANC. And so you should care, talk of nationalisation, investment restrictions on foreigners are also preventing job creation. Cast your vote for those whose policies can create jobs.

      badballie - 2012-07-06 11:06

I agree that talk of the past is a favourite pass time of politicians and the masses , but as for nonsense, I think you spent to much time listening to the Nonsense you village historian spewed in his stories of the past.

      Preshen - 2012-07-06 11:22

It is about time black people got over apartheid

Alicia u are an idiot and so are the people who gave a thumbs up to that stupid, senseless comment u just made. I can't even find words in the english vocab to describe people like u

      claudia.meads - 2012-07-06 13:52

Here is a short history of South Africa: First they forced people apart – now they are forcing people together. Note the operative words “FORCING PEOPLE”. Nothing has changed in South Africa – people are still living under duress, it is a simple and unavoidable recipe for absolute failure (Zimbabwe style). The inconvenient reality is, ‘skilled/educated black people’ are a rarity in any society, anywhere in the world – not only in the Western Cape. The fundamental reason is the BLACK ENTITLEMENT rage. Black people expect/demand others must teach them – viz “their skills must be developed”, as if it is something that you can feed somebody with a spoon (i.o.w. by duress)... The chilling reality is that if you cannot teach yourself, then NOBODY else ever will be able to do it – e.g. ask yourself who taught Europeans? The answer is – nobody taught Europeans, they taught themselves, hence the reason they are (by far) the inventive leaders of the known universe. Africa is like an alcoholic – it has a massive problem, but it refuses to face it, rather it blames everybody else for its problems.

      fred.warren.986 - 2012-09-07 19:16

Apartheid is the reason why blacks in South Africa have a much higher standard of living compared to those in other African countries. Without it, the natives would have destroyed the country long ago. Thanks to Vervoed (may his soul rest in peace) South Africa was the most developed African country in 1994. However now that the natives are back in power, I'm afraid we are fast heading towards another failed African state.

      poloyatonkim - 2012-07-06 11:02

Its 2012 for F&%$ sake, why would someone talk about 300 years ago...

      delish7564 - 2012-07-06 11:18

Why not Polyo, the ANC does in trying to justify land grabs. Also, as others have stated, if there were no blacks in the Western Cape then there is no justification for taking away farms etc, so actually it is relevant.

      peter.jefferies.90 - 2012-07-06 11:35

@Poloyatonkim you are an idiot! If this comment was made by an ANC memeber you would have only positive things today!! I agree with you it is 2012 so then can the ANC also stop refering to the past and blaming everyone else for their F*#K ups?

  • vincent.debeer.7 - 2012-07-06 10:19

  • Fouche - 2012-07-06 10:36

Total and utter politically correct cr*p! What about the lack of skills in our other provinces, and the rest of Africa for that matter...

  • JohncarlosBiza - 2012-07-06 10:41

You are lucky you are a media darling white woman, ms Zille. You can say that without being accused of having a chip over your shoulder and other attacks on this site. Back to the actual matter-the Cape has a very high rate of black university students. Many will choose to stay after graduating. It should self-regulate in a generation or two

      themba.thwala.98 - 2012-07-06 10:56

She could have said “there's an underconcentration of blacks in the WC” and still gotten away with it. On a serious note, she omitted the Job Colour Bar which was later replaced by the Coloured Labour Preference Act. Those pieces of legislation and the custom that developed even after they were abolished are responsible for blacks going to the WC to study and leave

  • Clive - 2012-07-06 10:49

Now what about the Eastern Cape? Why are there so many poor uneducated blacks ? Don't fall in this 'political hogwash' trap. Remember, 'A nation of sheep, breeds a government of wolves. !!

  • Thobile Lugwadu - 2012-07-06 10:50

I fully agree with u MADDAM Zille, in fact what you are saying is not new, its public knowledge and your people will always disagree with you. Apartheid is to blame for all the ills of the country. It devised means disparate settlements, bantu education, homelands, dompass, hostel dwellings, hut taxes etc. Its an evil system that was crafted by mass murderers,,who ,up until today are haunted by the desolute souls of the helpless men and women they killed in detentions, abducted from homes. Their offspring is angry and filled with anger due to the guilt of their ill-gotten oppulance. Viva zille vava!!!!!!!

      mrsku11 - 2012-07-06 11:31

I'm not saying Apartheid was right. It was wrong in many levels but you need to compare SA to before Apartheid, During Apartheid and after. There are many things that during apartheid helped and improved our black brothers. If we had a government that took all the benefits of that government and combined it with todays politically correct government. We would live in amazing country.

      davenewza - 2012-07-06 13:02

Thobile: Absolutely correct. Some white people (especially the ones on this site - and I'm white by the way) are still living in this naivety that Apartheid isn't responsible for a lot of the social and economic problems that blacks are experiencing today. Anyway, the important thing is that we look forward and make plans instead of ignoring or whinging about these problems. Go Zille.

      fred.warren.986 - 2012-09-07 19:14

Politicians are all the same, they are all for votes. So whether you vote DA or ANC, do not expect miracles.

      kenny.liebenberg - 2012-07-06 11:29

Peter! Believe you me, you will get better service from the DA then the ANC! It will not be miracles, but it would be something because the new government "witch I hope is soon" will still have to pay for all the ANC'S FU£K UPS!

  • chikunga - 2012-07-06 10:54

wow Zille with black refugees again.

  • colin.ashby.35 - 2012-07-06 10:56

time for me to move to the cape if thats the case. i am so fed up with "excuses"

  • gerald.nchabeleng - 2012-07-06 11:01

i should like to think that this story is incomplete and that Ma'am Zille did also mention that little policy called APARTHEID that clearly also played its significant role

      Fouche - 2012-07-06 11:16

Ai Gerald! Blame everything on apartheid! Just you wait and see, the ANC legacy will be WAYYY worse than apartheid.

      gerald.nchabeleng - 2012-07-06 11:36

@ Mgayi, Also, please explain to me...why is it so unfashionable to mention the "a" word...i do understand the argument about dangers of clinging to a sordid past, and how disempowering it is in itself to keep blaming the "a" policy and not doing anything about it, but one gets this sense of ghast when mentioning it. Perfect example is now with Fouche...i am keeping my argument to the subject matter, i am not passionate, i am merely stating academic point, and you in fact put it better why her omission of this...same as nationalisation...the moment you mention that word is like you have practically killed someone or you contrived leprosy. Whatever happened to just listening to arguments and debating issues without qualifying people with stereotypes?

      Fouche - 2012-07-06 11:47

      Point taken Gerald.

      Nyiks11 - 2012-07-06 11:59

Nchabeleng FACT:The effects of apartheid will linger on for a while in SA , problem is some people like Fouche think making mention of apartheid and its legacy is equal to apportioning blame to every whiteman dead or alive . For Fouche anybody who blames apartheid must be a member of the ANC and not of the DA ( Disguised Apartheid)

      gerald.nchabeleng - 2012-07-06 13:12

there goes news24 censorship...just deleted some of my and Mgayi's posts

      Nyiks11 - 2012-07-06 13:34

Gerald It's not censorship but disguised apartheid (DA) in action

  • chris.cunning.14 - 2012-07-06 11:05

I sure hope news24 published the wrong info, because I cannot see how that history dating 300 years back relates to eduction currently. That's more of a recent issue.

  • eric.west.984 - 2012-07-06 11:12

The prancing Godzille is so eager to please the blacks, she'll say anything to garner their votes. meanwhile, her white supporters are leaving the DA in droves!

      themba.thwala.98 - 2012-07-06 11:29

They are leaving the DA in droves to go where? Home where they belong as in the AWB? I hope retard Alicia is one of them. Mwahahahahahaha.

      sizwe.bwana - 2012-07-06 11:35

White voters are 10% of the population, so why should she worry about them? Its the black votes that matter. She also needs more blacks in the top positions in the DA, she needs to change the perception that its a white party, maybe she must become the tea girl and let lindiwe become the madam.

      JohncarlosBiza - 2012-07-06 12:04

The DA has not changed its policies. Right-wing chancers like you have 'left' because you didn't fit in

  • harryhobbit - 2012-07-06 11:18

What needs to be done, is for the tribal culture to be dragged kicking and screaming into the coconut culture. Why? because they don't have a place in the modern world economy. But they don't like the idea. What's she to do and why blame her?

  • Shirley Van Heerden - 2012-07-06 11:19

Geez guys!!! It is called demographics. The population is what it is the western cape!! Why are their so few coloureds in the Transkei?? Why not celebrate this country's diversity, but no!! we will rather mix it all up and get a generic south african profile. Cultural diversity and demographics go hand in hand. Stop making race the only tool in which a successful country is measured.

      Hugo - 2012-07-06 21:11

eh um where is transkei again?

  • Nyiks11 - 2012-07-06 11:21

And you can hear it in my broken english when I talk I'm black man in Cape Town Ooh oh I'm a refugee I'm a legal refugee I'm a black man in Cape Toooown

  • Kaykay - 2012-07-06 11:28

@Alicia Did you ever think of how ignorant your community and parents were and how ignorant you are? Now that you know where your relatives came from for you to be born in the area you think belong to you... Can you please excuse us with peace! LoL! Only constructive immigrants are welcome in the Western Cape not people thinking like you do! LoL!

  • samoras - 2012-07-06 11:29

If that's the case let's give cape to the KHOI mense.

  • sadrick.lottering - 2012-07-06 11:30

Zille, i think i wil remove your pic from my Facebook account. Racism to garner votes... the same instrument the ANC uses to keep S.A divided, not a very liberating move.

  • ashley.james.3701779 - 2012-07-06 11:31

You know what, in the near future there won't be black or white. there will be mixed race with all the mixed race couples making babies.

      kenny.liebenberg - 2012-07-06 11:37

Listen Ashley, I admire your thought and hopes and I wish for the same thing to happen quicker rather than later. But reality is that it is only going to happen in the next 30000000000 years from now on. We should come up with a better salution then to think into the future!

  • colin.ashby.35 - 2012-07-06 11:32

the only reason the DA never get into power is that they don't offer anything of substance to the people.its about time they offered housing, electricity, water and a better life.if they can't fulfill it, its a start to achieve half of it. the and only got power because they promised things. come on da.

  • quartus.vanzyl - 2012-09-07 16:30

there are no middle class blacks. they are either extremely rich or living in squatter camps. if you are politically connected you fall in the first category.

Proving once again what a bunch of pandering scumbags politicians are. We should build a coliseum, fill it with lions and trow each and every politician on earth to the lions... for the entertainment of the citizens off course, about time we get something nice with our tax cash.
