Bloemfontein - Four people died in a three-vehicle collision on the N6 highway near Rouxville in the Free State, police reported on Tuesday.
Early on Tuesday morning an unidentified red vehicle collided with a station wagon packed with eight people, Inspector Harry Nagel said.
The red vehicle had been meandering over the road, and not keeping in the correct lane, according to the driver of a delivery truck that was following behind it.
The collision caused the station wagon to swerve, and crash into the truck, killing two adults and two children. The four surviving passengers (parents of the dead children, and two more children) were taken to hospital. Only the mother is in a serious condition. The driver of the truck was not seriously injured.
Nagel said the driver of the red vehicle sped off without stopping. A case of culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving had been registered.
The identity and age of the deceased would be released as soon as the next of kin had been informed of the accident, said Nagel.
