Port Elizabeth - About 50 homeowners in an Eastern Cape hamlet have been given two months to demolish homes and move out.

According to the Sunday Times, residents of the Fish River Mouth settlement started negotiations last year to renew their municipal leases but were instead last week served with demolition orders.

The settlement is almost 200 years old. Regular visitors built bungalows near the beach and then obtained leases from the local municipality.

One resident, Joe Stapleton, said the government order has scared “the hell out of most people”. He said they were getting legal counsel on how to tackle the problem.

The settlement is across the river from the Fish River Sun Hotel and Port Alfred is a mere 20-minute drive away. One homeowner said the government move could be linked to a recent standoff between leaseholders and an illegal squatter who built a shack close to the river mouth.
