Johannesburg - United Democratic Movement leader Bantu  Holomisa was one of the last people to visit Nelson Mandela on Thursday before the global icon passed away.

According to the Sunday Independent, Holomisa, a close friend of the Mandelas received a distress call, summoning him to the house on Thursday evening.

Holomisa said that when he arrived he saw his close friend was gravely ill and in pain. He said that Mandela had fought right up to his last breath. Close family members including Mandela’s ex-wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela were at his bedside when he died.

Elders of the Thembu clan were also present. They performed a traditional ritual of the closing of the eyes – to ease the transition from life.

Holomisa spent about an hour at the house before leaving shortly after 19:00. Madiba died at 20:50.
