Homeless men held over gun

2012-09-16 21:01

Johannesburg - Two homeless men would appear in Brixton Magistrate's Court on Monday after they were arrested in Johannesburg in possession of an unlicensed rifle, Gauteng police said.

On Friday, police saw the men, who were pulling recycling trolleys, partially blocking traffic in Empire Avenue, in Brixton, Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said.

One of the two men looked "suspicious" and the officers approached them.

"As police confronted them, they panicked. Their trolley was then searched and police found an unregistered rifle wrapped in a cloth," Dlamini said.

Police were investigating how the men came to be in possession of the rifle.

"Members of the public are warned to be careful when dealing with people collecting rubbish for recycling as they may be potential housebreakers and robbers."
