Honeydew taxi owner shot dead

2012-01-31 18:44
Johannesburg - A taxi owner was shot dead and two people were seriously wounded in a drive-by shooting in Honeydew on Tuesday, police said.

The taxi owner was standing on the corner of Hendrik Potgieter and Peter roads talking to a colleague when shots were fired from a white Toyota Corolla, Lieutenant Colonel Tshisikhawe Ndou said.

Both men were hit. The owner's colleague was wounded. A passenger in a passing taxi was also wounded.

The shooting was believed to be part of growing tension between the Faraday and Dorljota taxi associations over routes in the Honeydew area.

"We are still trying to work out what happened and which taxi association the victim belonged to," said Ndou.

A murder case was being investigated by police.

On Monday, a taxi was reportedly forced off the road in Hendrik Potgieter Road and its driver was beaten with a sjambok.

He was taken to hospital and had since laid a charge of assault, Ndou said.
