Horror find in supermarket cold storeroom

2011-02-08 09:35

Pretoria - Two dead cats that would probably be sold as meat to unsuspecting clients have been found in the cold storage room of a wholesale supermarket outside Ga-Rankuwa, north of Pretoria.

One cat had already been skinned.

The Hawks closed the business on Monday.

They also found four small frozen crocodiles in the cold storage room and carcasses of animals that had apparently died in the veld.

The meat of the animals would probably have ended up in processed meat products and boerewors, said Hawks spokesperson Colonel McIntosh Polela.

There was also the skin of a zebra in the cold storage room.

Theft syndicate

The Hawks investigated this business on Monday after they arrested 16 suspects on Friday who were linked to an alleged syndicate that had stolen millions of rands of goods from the Shoprite/Checkers group.

The owner, known only as Dos Santos (in his early 60s), of the company Santos Liquor Store and Supermarket, was one of the suspects who had been arrested.

The Hawks also found 200 crocodiles which were held in terrible conditions in an old farm dam on a smallholding across the road. Polela said the crocodiles lay one top of one another due to a lack of space.

When they arrived at the smallholding on Monday along with the Green Scorpions and nature conservation officials, there were only 20 of the crocodiles left. They are now looking for the others.

Polela said the crocodiles had apparently been moved from the smallholding on Saturday night with two bakkies.

"They (the people who removed the crocodiles) not only transgressed by not having the necessary permits and keeping the crocodiles in terrible conditions, but also defeated the ends of justice by disregarding an order not to interfere with the crime scene," said Polela.

In a storeroom, the Hawks found old crocodile skulls, still covered with skin, several animal skins and stuffed animals, among them a baboon head, antelope heads and several threatened wild cat species.

Polela said the Hawks had become aware of a syndicate - in which employees of the store, shop owners, truck drivers, private wholesalers and security guards were involved - about a year ago.

"Shoprite transports tons of goods to its shops on a daily basis.

"The syndicate, however, would deliver none or only some of the goods at certain stores. They colluded with the shop personnel, who signed for the goods as if they had been delivered. The goods were then sold to private wholesalers."

Shoprite/Checkers suffered damages of millions of rands due to the theft.

The Hawks and Shoprite collaborated in the investigation and identified suspected syndicate members who worked between Pretoria, Ga-Rankuwa and Brits.

The 16 suspects appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on charges of theft on Monday.

They were released on bail of between R2 000 and R3 000 each.

All of the accused indicated that they intended to plead guilty to the charges against them.

Only in SA...any topic becomes racial or political. Yawn!!!

      Grant - 2011-02-08 11:27

@Bratt - dont be dumb. Asa political party, yes, the DA would do a whole lot better than the ANC, but to suggest that things like this would never happen is just silly. Unless you literally do everything YOURSELF (including driving teh truck, offloading the truck, packing the shelves and personally selling each item to cannot guarantee that funny things wont happen in between.

      AJ - 2011-02-08 11:30

@Gareth Leonard - what a silly comment. Do enlighten us as to what good and bad opposition is, then?

I know its serious - but i had to laugh at the lips and arseholes! eeww

      Shistirrer - 2011-02-08 09:58

Only buy from trusted supermarkets, and then only buy "boerewors", not braai wors, budget wors, or anything else. Boerewors has a certain recipe (percentages of what may be in it) that must be adhered to by law. The butcher can only vary the spices.

      rainman - 2011-02-08 10:02

oh gosh, you have made my day. i cant stop laughing...and i know it is no laughing matter, but damn this is funny the way you put it.

I ate cat in Israel. My friends from Thailand cooked it up for me and I was none the wiser.......tastes just like ordinary beef. I wouldn't do it again, but its kinda weird how its okay to eat one type of animal but not another?

      GBES - 2011-02-08 11:08

I will eat anything if its tasty & and prepared hygienically.Just tell what I am eating,do not rob me.I do not discriminate,so any animal is welcome.Ok,maybe not MY cat/dog,but that barking nuisance next door, will go down well with a beer.Hmmmm.

      Snoopy88 - 2011-02-08 11:30

LOL that's so funny! Yeah why is it ok to eat a little piggie but not a kitty? Or a rat for that matter. And my neighbour has like 5 cats and she refuses to get them fixed... mmmm... Cat burgers anyone?

  • matla - 2011-02-08 09:56

we all know which sections of our polpulation own these supermarkets, dont we? We have been eating rottem meat in the township for a very long time..

      Shistirrer - 2011-02-08 10:18

This supermarket belongs to a Portuguese immigrant and proven crook. Probably has mafia connections as well. Sorry, your point is... ? I have also seen the filthy, fly-infested "butcheries" in the townships. And we all know which sections of our population own these butcheries, don't we?

      pinkalert - 2011-02-08 11:21

It does not matter from where you are - food labels are there for a reason, and if the owner is pulling the wool over your eyes , he should be sued for fraud, becuase at the end of the day, that is what it is Fraud and along with that he should get a jail term.

      Snoopy88 - 2011-02-08 11:32

I agree, sell me something new and interesting but don't sell me other people's pets and charge me for beef!

      lethumbiko - 2011-02-08 11:40

I've been chowing township meat for the past 25years and I'm still healthy. You and I both know who the real culprits are so stop your misleading accusations.

  • tigertank - 2011-02-08 09:58

Maybe not as bad, but yesteday I walked into one of the major supermarkets (can I say their name online?), picked up a packet of vegetables, and felt something odd on my hand. It was, to my shock, animal faeces....yes, poo. It looked like it, it smelt like it, it felt like it (I have dogs) exactly dog-you-know-what ended up in the packaged produce section, I don't know.

      focus.ntfc - 2011-02-08 10:10

I hope you didnt re-sell it to unsuspecting customers?? What did you do as a matter of fact and yes we would like to know the name of the supermarket ....

      Flee - 2011-02-08 10:11

      Fertilizer hahahhahaha

      d_cuz - 2011-02-08 11:34

It looked like it, it smelt like it, it felt like it ... but did you taste it... can't make a false ruling unless all the facts are on the table!!!

      Benny66 - 2011-02-08 12:05

d_cuz is quite right you know. These days you can buy Poop in a toy shop that looks like; smells like and feels like the real thing. The only way to distinguish if it is real is to taste it! YUCK!

      gfdevilliers - 2011-02-08 12:21

Could that perhaps be because the supermarkets allow women to carry their retarded stoepkakker dogs into the supermarket under their arms? Handle the dog...handle some fresh food...handle the dog...put the dog down to take a long as poor precious Snoopy doesn't get left behind at home and I can take him with me to the shops....

      Picasso - 2011-02-09 11:15

gfdevilliers, allowing children in supermarkets and any food places for that matter is even worst. The otherday I sat at a waffle place at a shopping centre. When this little 4 year old bratt came and lick off all the tips of the syrup containers on the shelf, and mother bratt thinks it is sooooooo cute! Let's not even mention the kiddies running around in supermarkets touching and chewing on the stuff on the shelfs.

  • Ascendo Tuum - 2011-02-08 09:59

Somewhere in the 90's we were coming back from our trip to CapeTown via Kimberley toward Jo-Burg. We stopped off at what looked like a very popular roadhouse (In Klerksdorp I think) and had these huge burgers for a very reasonable price. A couple of months later it was in the news that they had been raided due to a large amount of missing dogs and cats in the area...

      Will2.0 - 2011-02-08 10:41

      Were the burgers tasty?

      AJ - 2011-02-08 11:34

Only the flat cats and dogs were missing; could have been Welkom where you could get those monster burgers; a small cat could easily fit. They were tasty too.

      Picasso - 2011-02-09 07:50

I remembered that one of Klerksdorp and yes, the burgers were very tasty. Wat die oog nie sien nie, maak die maag (hart) nie seer nie!

How many years do you think it's going to take to sort out the human rights in this country - we've already had 16 years! PS, love the way you’re always labelled a bunny-hugger if you dare say something about animal rights!

      Tieneke - 2011-02-08 12:22

Just wondering, are you a vegetarian? What makes you think the cat, crocodile or donkey was killed more inhumanely than cattle or sheep?

      Snoopy88 - 2011-02-08 13:33

Well licensed abatoirs are generally quite good at offing them quickly with as little pain us possible. Can't do anything about the fear though... those animals can smell the death.

      richard - 2011-02-09 00:13

This man is no patch to the animals that this country is producing with malema's killing songs. Now that is sick.

but all these meats, dogs, cat, monkeys, crocs etc are not poisonous. what is the difference between beef and dogs meat. no wonder i am a veggie. there is no difference except the attitude, biasness and discrimination of the consumer. they are all red meat.

      kznsc - 2011-02-08 11:52

George tell me you dont eat bacon or crave a nice thick steak on the braai or a boerie roll when you walk past a street vender! Ha....."Veggies" are in denial! Meat is protein and our bodies need protein.

Move to Oz and mate with sheep

      James Lenoir - 2011-02-08 14:16

That's not sheep you're eating mate! They've been culling kangaroo for their meat for years now, since in many parts of OZ, kangaroos are actually a pest.

      brown_bread - 2011-02-09 11:46

wouldnt confidently say sheep, something like sheeman being?

  • Snoopy88 - 2011-02-08 11:41

"Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils" The spirit speaketh not expressly enough for me to understand that he meant some douche will sell cat as beef.

      James Lenoir - 2011-02-08 14:13

What is it with Christians and their obsession with the end times? It's been "last days" since 30AD, with every Christian, thereafter convinced that Jesus was coming in their lifetime. Do you know how many people have lived depressing unfulfilled lives because of this obsession? Far too many!! Seriously pastorwilkyd, you guys need a hobby...

  • tut - 2011-02-08 11:46

"2 skinned cats, three crocodiles, one zebra skin and a partridge in a pear tree" - Santos Claus African investments. See any frozen rednose reindeer with the rest of the chilled game?

  • kznsc - 2011-02-08 11:48

Now I know why every Checkers I walk into is a peculiar smell and very destinct.......I buy my meat at an old fashioned butcher and NOT at supermarkets. Bring back the butcher and local cafe around the corner.

      ShellR - 2011-02-08 12:30

You are so right. Checkers has a very distinct smell about it, a smell that screams SALMONELLA !!!

      harry1 - 2011-02-08 12:39

      Hear, hear!!!

      cast1234 - 2011-02-08 16:23

I was scrolling the comments to see who had picked up on the Checkers comment - so very true, I will never buy meat from their franchise. Makes one wonder.....

      abriej - 2011-02-09 14:31

Butcher cat tastes better than Checkers cat!

  • madcow - 2011-02-08 11:49
