Hospital rapist appears in court
Durban - The man who walked into a North West hospital and allegedly raped a patient briefly appeared in the Mmabatho Magistrate's Court, North West police said on Thursday.
"The 29-year-old suspect appeared in court on Wednesday on a charge of rape," spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lesego Metsi said.
He apparently entered the Mahikeng Provincial Hospital around 15:00 on Christmas day pretending to be visiting a patient in the women's ward.
There were three women in the room.
"After realising that the other two patients were in a critical condition and could not speak nor scream, the suspect approached the third patient, a 22-year-old female and allegedly raped her."
Around 16:00 security guards found him near the victim's bed. When they approached him he threatened them. He was arrested. The alleged rapist and victim did not know each other. The man's case was postponed to February 2.
This is third case involving a woman being raped in a hospital in the past three months. A male nurse is accused of raping a disabled patient at the Osindisweni hospital in Verulam, north of Durban.
In October a male nurse allegedly raped a cancer patient at the National Hospital in Bloemfontein. The woman died shortly afterwards.
