Johannesburg - The infamous "house of horrors" in Springs could become a house of care for children.

The Witness reported on Friday that a charity organisation and members of the community are negotiating with the owner of the property with the aim of converting the large double-storey house into a safe place for children.

The chairperson of the Wild Wild Guardians charity organisation told the newspaper that the house is currently standing empty, and would be ideal for a children's home. It has plenty of rooms and a large garden with a swimming pool. The current children's home in Springs is situated in a bad area, and they hope to move it to this location.

Donors who will pay the rent and maintenance have been found, and the charity hopes to start with renovations as soon as possible.

The chairperson said everybody in the community was excited about turning the house of horrors into a house of love.

The man accused of keeping his wife and five children captive in the house appeared in the Springs Magistrate's Court on Thursday. He faces a number of charges, including child abuse, rape, assault, and defeating the ends of justice. The case was postponed to 25 July for further investigation.

Meanwhile, the man's wife told Beeld that she was doing a lot better than when she and the children were removed from the house.
