Johannesburg - Mop up operations were underway in Orlando West, Soweto after houses were flooded, emergency services said on Saturday.

"Two flooding incidents were reported in Orlando West on Saturday morning where a couple of houses were flooded, there were no injuries reported," said City of Joburg emergency services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi.

A lightning incident was also reported in Diepkloof where two houses were struck by lightning.

No one was injured, said Mulaudzi.

"Mop up operations [have] already started in both incidents. Disaster management officials are on scene to assist the affected households."

Meanwhile, several major roads were flooded and vehicles trapped on Saturday morning.

Emergency services were in a process of rescuing motorists and passengers trapped at a flooded New Canada Road, opposite the New Canada train station in Soweto.

Road closed

A taxi with passengers and a Mercedes Benz with three people inside were trapped as a result of heavy rainfall that flooded the road, said Mulaudzi.

The road has been closed for traffic.

The Klipspruit Valley road in Nancefield was also closed after several cars were swept away by the heavy rainfall.

No injuries were reported, said Mulaudzi. "We advice motorists to use alternative routes and avoid the flooded roads until water levels have subsided."

Heavy rainfall and cold weather was experienced in most parts of the country during the past 24 hours.

The SA Weather Service has indicated that the rain and the cold weather would last throughout the weekend.
