Johannesburg - The National Sea Rescue Institute was searching for a teenage boy who is presumed to have drowned at Flora Bay, next to Hout Bay's main beach, on Sunday.

"An extensive sea, air and shore search has revealed no sign of a 14-year -old male, from Hout Bay, who is missing and who is presumed to have drowned," NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said in a statement.

A police dive unit joined in the ongoing search operation.

Lambinon said an inquest docket was opened and the child's mother, family and friends were at the beach and were attended to by police trauma counsellors.

The boy's family, a motorcyclist on Chapman's Peak Drive and a policeman saw the teenager disappear under the water about 30m off-shore of Flora Bay while swimming.

I witnessed the boy struggling in the water from chapmans peak and urgently my friend down to the beach on his scooter to try rescue the boy. You're right. i watched the poor boy. he went under and just over a minute later my friend starting sprinting to the water. he was far out and the water obstructed his vision. I could not direct my friend as the boy's body was under dark blue water. What a sad day. God bless him
