Johannesburg - A huge fire has destroyed one floor in an office building in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, emergency services said on Friday.

"The whole of the sixth floor was destroyed after the fire broke out after 02:00," said Johannesburg emergency services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi.

"The investigating team will start finding out whether the building is safe for usage and what had caused the fire."

The 25-storey building is on Smit Street.

Johannesburg metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said traffic is being diverted into Harrison Street.

"Smit Street has been closed off, motorists can use Harrison, Bree or Jorissen Streets as alternative routes," Minnaar said.
