Hunt for baby attacker still on

Johannesburg - The search is still on for Mozambican Chakhoma Machaba, wanted in connection with the brutal attack on a toddler and her minder in Robindale, Gauteng police said on Wednesday.

Lieutenant Colonel Eugene Opperman said contrary to media reports that Machaba had fled to Mozambique, police suspected he was still in Gauteng and a search for him would continue.

"Investigations by detectives and feedback from the public suggest that Machaba visits people in Soweto and Alexandra. The team of detectives is still working around the clock to find and arrest him."

Two in court

Machaba is believed to be one of three men who assaulted baby Marzanne Kruger and Francina Sekhu in Robindale, north of Johannesburg last Thursday.

Nelson Maphosa and Gerald Nyantumbo were arrest in connection with the attack and were charged with aggravated robbery and attempted murder.

They briefly appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

The case against them was postponed to May 12 and they were held in custody.

Kruger was still in a serious but stable condition in the Sandton Medi-clinic, while Sekhu was recovering in the Helen Joseph hospital.
