Hunt on for Rhodes student's killers

2012-04-16 16:29

Cape Town - Eastern Cape police are still searching for the murderers of the 23-year-old student who was killed while on her way to her graduation ceremony.

Lelona Thembakazi Fufu, 23, a Rhodes University student, was murdered while hitchhiking to her graduation ceremony late last week.

Her body was found in Addo Road in Port Elizabeth on Friday. She had knife wounds to her chest and neck.

"At this stage it seems that she was murdered in a robbery. Her clothes were still on her body and her valuables were gone," police spokesperson André Beetge told News24.

Beetge told News24 they hoped to start arresting suspects soon.

Fufu was due to receive her BSc Honours degree at a ceremony at the University in Grahamstown on Thursday evening.

She was last seen at 14:00 when she left her house in Motherwell, Port Elizabeth.

Fufu's family arranged to travel to Grahamstown later in the afternoon, but lost contact with her after 14:30, and reported her missing to the police after 19:00 on Thursday, Rhodes University spokesperson Zama Matiwana told News24.

"We’re all shocked about what happened to her," Matiwana said.

Matiwana said they are planning to hold a memorial service for Fufu which will be confirmed once they receive a funeral date from her family.

He said the incident is even more tragic because of her death right before her graduation.

This is tragic news. My sincere condolences to her family. May her soul rest in peace. Killing a person for stupid cellphone and small amount of money. Our country is in trouble.... "Safe South Africa, Mr President"

      Tanie - 2012-04-16 16:51

You do not have to kill anyone for whatever reasons,Siya. Bustards and someone out there knows who did this hell practices but they will chose to keep quiet as if they will be save around their monster.Savages.

      Grace - 2012-04-16 17:05

Zuma is too busy getting married, finding future wives, doing R64million renovations to his wives homes and thinking where else he can tax us to care!

      Smell - 2012-04-16 17:22

Heartbreaking. Hitchhiking to her graduation ceremony. That suggests a disadvantaged person that worked hard to rise above her circumstances. The ANC leadership should always react with indignation and resolve when incidents like this happens, Black or White. At least pay lip service to the dead.

      Shocking,

      Jaja - 2012-04-16 18:06

ek is hartseer. To think that the sacrifices that she and her family made have just gone down the drain!...not enough words to express my condolences. May they find the bloody agents that did this and do unspeakable things to them.

  • Jozi - 2012-04-16 16:49

Condolences to the family. Lady's and gentlemen please dont ever think that hitchhiking is safe when travelling anywhere in the world. You stand a 50/50 chance of reaching your destination.

      flysouth - 2012-04-16 17:11

Unless you are carrying a small gun. Then it's okay.

      Jozi - 2012-04-16 17:35

Then you could probable afford to fly or take a taxi or Greyhound bus?

  • Rob - 2012-04-16 16:50

Why the killing ? All the time. How do you sleep @ night Zuma.

      winston.mullany - 2012-04-17 09:33

This is a tragic story but why in the hell was she hitch hiking?

      Faizie - 2012-04-16 17:04

      Duh, no money

      siyadyosiba - 2012-04-16 17:10

@lerise, its common in eastern cape, its cheaper and a quicker way of getting to your destination.

      Antipoaching - 2012-04-17 09:21

Lerise, I work at Rhodes and have chatted to a number of our students in the last few days, the harsh reality is that many of our students simply don't have the cash for Greyhounds/City-to-City etc. Siyadyosiba is quite correct, hitch-hiking is also encredibly common in the Eastern Cape. The loss of Lelona has saddened all at the University, especially our Dean of Students and our Vice-Chancellor who both take the loss of any student very personally RIP Lelona

That poor lady's life was worth so much more than that vermin's. It's such a tragedy that they're housed and fed when captured instead of just being exterminated. I can't even begin to imagine how her family feels.

      siyadyosiba - 2012-04-16 17:14

Probably all hopes were on her to turnaround the family's fortunes for better. Now she is gone, culprits on the loose, high with "nyaupe" and scratching their balls.

  • Natasha - 2012-04-16 17:16

    This is truly sad...

  • Mike Purchase - 2012-04-16 19:04

Find the scum who did this and torture them on international tv,let them scream and die slowly.

  • Tumelo - 2012-04-16 19:15

The sooner our politicians start focusing on real issues like crime, and stop responding to newspaper articles about obvious truth the better! Crime needs serious attention and there is generally no police presence!

That poor young lady was hitching - that means she must have worked harder than most to get her degree. Sincere condolences to her family. Makes me so sad and angry.

Hugh what the authorities must do is hand the perp over to her family once they catch him...thats true justice....
