Cape Town – “Each year, NSFAS wants me to provide proof that my parents are dead."

On Friday, UWC rector Tyrone Pretorius addressed a combined UWC and CPUT Bellville student protest at UWC’s Student Centre.

Around 2000 students from the two universities assembled in the hall to confront Pretorius on the university’s plans for the 2016 financial year, as part of the wider #FeesMustFall protest.

Once the rector was finished speaking, the floor was opened to student questions.

One student got the chance to speak out on his experience of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) process.

"I've got a big problem with NSFAS," he told the crowd in isiXhosa. “Each year, NSFAS wants me to provide proof that my parents are dead.

"I don't need to be reminded every year that I've lost a parent,” he concluded with firm agreements from the gathered crowd.

We want your feedback. Whether good or bad, what’s been your experience of the NSFAS financial aid programme?
