Johannesburg - Two people were killed in an attempted robbery at the Clearwater mall, west of Johannesburg on Tuesday morning.

''I thought there were crackers going off,'' marketing manager for the popular centre Cecile Braun said after six people attempted to steal cellphones and laptops from a vehicle at the Standard Bank entrance.

All of the suspects were apprehended in the parking lot.

''We can confirm that shots were fired in our parking area,'' said Braun. "It's all fine now. It was immediately brought under control. It lasted for literally a couple of seconds.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said from the scene that four people were injured.

Braun said that two people were shot during the attempted robbery of an RTT security vehicle.

Comments from police, who were on the scene, were not immediately available.
