Johannesburg - Matric examinations for Independent Examinations Board (IEB) candidates start on Tuesday, it said.

"Today marks the start of the 2014 National Senior Certificate examinations for 9 978 full time candidates and 519 private candidates registered with the Independent Examinations Board," IEB CEO Anne Oberholzer said in a statement.

The candidates would write their exams at 191 examination centres across the country, she said.

The IEB had introduced an electronic locking system to control the distribution and collection of examination materials.

The exams would end on 28 November.

"The IEB anticipates that results will be released to learners on 31 December 2014."
