Durban - A senior member of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) was killed in a car crash in northern KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday morning, police said.
Captain Sipho Mdletshe said Simon Gumede died after his vehicle collided with a truck at an intersection on the road between Hluhluwe and Mbazwama.
Mdletshe said that Gumede was turning onto the road when the collision occurred.
Details surrounding the accident were not immediately available, but the truck driver told police that Gumede had stopped at the intersection before pulling out into the middle of the main road. Both the driver and Gumede then swerved to the far side in a bid to avoid each other, but collided.
Gumede died at the accident scene.
He was the former chief whip of the Inkatha Freedom Party in the KwaZulu-Natal legislature and a traditional leader.
The IFP was expected to issue a statement shortly.
