IFP members shot in KwaMashu

Durban - Two Inkatha Freedom Party members were shot outside
the office of a councillor in Durban's KwaMashu township, police said on
Tuesday.
The shooting took place in Musa Road, in A-section of
Kwamashu, at around 09:00 on Monday morning, police spokesperson Colonel Jay
Naicker said.
One of the two men died, the other was wounded. No arrests had been made. A case of murder and attempted murder had been opened.
The IFP's provincial caucus leader Blessed Gwala said
in a statement that the shooting happened at Ward 39 councillor Sakhi
Ngcamu's office.
Political violence
Ngcamu replaced ward councillor Themba Xulu, who was
abducted in October last year, from his house in Musa Road. His
bullet-riddled body was later found in a cane field in Durban's outlying
Inanda area.
Gwala said the attack was the second on the newly-elected councillor.
"On Saturday our newly-elected Ward 39 councillor was
attacked by unknown men while he was engaging with some of his community
members.
"In this incident one person was injured while others
managed to escape. Today we have received a report that a person was
shot and killed and one was left injured while they were at the
councillor's office. This is totally unacceptable and we are against any
type of violence," he said.
The area was plagued by violence ahead of the
by-election that saw Ngcamu elected on 6 December. A number of IFP
members were killed and a journalist's car was torched. There had been
tensions between the IFP and the breakaway National Freedom Party in the
province.
Gwala questioned why councillors from the ruling
African National Congress received bodyguards paid for by the eThekwini
metro municipality, but the IFP did not.
