IPID gets R8 crash docket

Johannesburg - The docket on an accident that killed a policeman
and an Audi R8 driver has been received by the Independent Police Investigative
Directorate (IPID).
"We received the docket on Tuesday; it is not like
it was missing," IPID spokesperson Moses Dlamini said on Thursday.
He dismissed some media reports that the docket into the
R8 crash was missing, and said processes had to be followed before they could
get it.
"It is just that it was not in our hands at the
time. We have to make a request from police because they are the ones who write
it, and it is not like we just go to the police station and take it," he
said.
The IPID had started interviewing witnesses and called on
other people to come forward.
Constable Goodman Lubisi, 31, was killed when the Audi he
was a passenger in crashed on Oxford Road, Rosebank, on 10 December.
According to the police's version of events the driver,
Areff Haffejee, sped off while Lubisi was in the car searching it for drugs on
Rivonia Road in Sandown.
He had apparently found a small amount of dagga.
The other officer gave chase in a police van.
Haffejee lost control and hit a tree, a wall and a
street-light.
The Star, however, quoted an eyewitness as saying:
"I looked that guy [the policeman] in the eyes shortly before he died and
he was very relaxed in the passenger seat.
"He had his elbow resting out the window, his seat
was rolled back a bit and he was chilling," the witness, identified only
as Sly, told the newspaper.
Sly said it did not look like the police van was chasing
the Audi, as its siren and blue lights were not switched on.
