Johannesburg - A Limpopo man has been sentenced in Modimolle for harbouring two escaped Boeremag trialists, Beeld reported on Saturday.

Jaco Bogaards, 53, was handed a four-year prison term, suspended for one year, in the district court on Friday.

"I will take my hiding. Send my regards to everyone," he reportedly told friends after the case.

His defence wanted to appeal the sentence, but Bogaards decided against it.

"It eats away at the family," he said.

He was found guilty for contravening the Protection of Constitutional Democracy Against Terrorist and Related Activities Act and for harbouring two escaped Boeremag trialists.

In 2006, Rudi Gouws and Herman van Rooyen hid on his farm between Modimolle and Bela-Bela for eight months. They escaped from the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria in May that year.

The sentence was handed after numerous appeals in the High Court. Bogaards appealed his conviction and sentence. He was initially sentenced to five-years, two of which were suspended.

He also appealed in the Supreme Court of Appeal where he was sentenced to an effective five years.

He then went to the Constitutional Court, but failed and the matter was referred back to the district court for a new sentencing.
