Johannesburg - Nearly R50 000 confiscated from a vendor who sold smuggled cigarettes in Musina, was forfeited to the State on Monday, Limpopo police said.

Lieutenant Colonel Mohale Ramatseba said Ngoni Nhaw, 38, was found in possession of cigarettes worth about R3 825 in January 2011.

He paid an admission of guilt fine of R1 500. An amount of R48 810 was found in his possession and was confiscated by the police.

"The police's Asset Forfeiture Unit was successfully granted permission today to forfeit the money to the State as it was acquired through the commission of crime," Ramatseba said.

"The order is welcomed by police as it will assist the police to fight the smuggling of cigarettes and other offences."
