THE start of an illegal dump site behind the old Wanderers Club is obstructing the race route for this year’s KZN Cross Country Champs.

The dump, a mass of building rubble, old fridges, pool pumps and general waste, spills across the old cricket field behind the club and along the banks of the Duzi River.

Pietermaritzburg local Andre Booysen of Collegian Harriers said the dumping originally started when building rubble was being dumped to create a bank. However, the dumping soon began to spill onto the cross country champs race course.

“This year Pietermaritzburg is hosting the KZN champs. We had cleared a path along the river so the runners could enjoy the Duzi river.

“All this rubble and general waste is being dumped on a provincial cross country course.”

The race is expected to be hosted on August 22.

“People from all over the province will be running through a landfill site,” said Booysen.

KZN Athletics Cross Country chair Kylie Griffin said she had not been aware of the rubble being dumped on the course but hoped the route would be cleared before the big race.

“This is the premier event of the entire season. All of KZN’s top athletes will be running to be selected for our provincial team. “It would be devastating if the Msunduzi Municipality doesn’t clear it in time,” she said.

Msunduzi Municipal spokesperson Nqobile Madonda said the municipality was unaware of the dump but would clear it.

“We will arrange for it to be cleared right away,” said Madonda.
