Johannesburg - The 33 illegal miners arrested at the
Sibanye gold mine on the West Rand were formally charged on Thursday, the Hawks
said.
Hawks spokesperson Paul Ramaloko said the men faced eight
charges each.
The charges include theft, possession of dangerous
weapons and suspected stolen property, trespassing, illegal mining, violating
the health and safety act as well as the environmental management act.
They were caught underground at the mine last Wednesday.
"They were found with mining equipment, 50kg of gold
bearing material and a substantial amount of cash," he said.
The men were expected to appear in the Westonaria
Magistrate's Court on Friday.
