Johannesburg - Three men have been arrested for operating unlicensed shebeens in Soweto, Gauteng police said on Saturday.

Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said the men, aged between 40 and 63, were arrested on Friday and their businesses were shut down.

They were expected to appear in court soon.

The arrests came shortly after Soweto police launched a festive season crackdown project.

"The project is called 'Operation Duty Calls for Festive Season', said Makhubela.

He said the initiative would see police clamping down on illegal shebeen owners and those who drove under the influence of alcohol.

"On Friday, we arrested ten people all around Soweto for driving under the influence [of alcohol]."

Police would stage more roadblocks ahead of the festive season.

The clampdown would continue until the next year.
