Illegal shebeens closed in Soweto

Johannesburg - Eighteen illegal shebeens and three bottle shops have been closed in Soweto, Gauteng police said on Sunday.

The police also recovered alcohol worth thousands of rand and arrested 210 people for various crimes in an operation in Diepkloof and Zola on Saturday, said Warrant officer Kay Makhubela.

He said 42 foreigners were caught without documentation, 37 people were detained for drunken driving, 17 for dealing in drugs, 11 for possession of magazines and ammunition, eight for possession of stolen property and one for rape.

They would appear in various magistrates' courts on Monday.
