Johannesburg - An immigration officer appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate's Court on Tuesday on a charge of corruption, the Hawks said.

"He was granted bail of R1 000 and the case was postponed to 25 July for final investigations," said police spokesperson Paul Ramaloko.

Edmond Lekgothoane, 37, was arrested on Friday for allegedly soliciting a R7 000 bribe from a Bangladeshi businessman.

"Allegations are that the immigration officer confronted the businessman and told him his asylum had expired, and then he solicited the bribe," Ramaloko said.

The asylum had not expired and the man notified the police.

The Hawks arrested the officer as the money was handed over.
