Johannesburg - The Azanian People's Organisation will on Tuesday commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the death in detention of Black Consciousness
Movement founder and leader Steve Biko.
Azapo has planned a national programme until September 16 to pay tribute to Biko, who died on September 12, 1977, aged 32, after he was beaten by apartheid police.
The movement adopted the theme "Towards Black Economic Control" and a number of speakers will give lectures on Black Consciousness at several venues in South Africa, in memory of the ideals of Biko.
An inquest in 1978 found that Biko had suffered a massive blow to the head which caused him to lapse into a coma, but no-one was prosecuted for his death.
Biko and the Black Consciousness movement militantly opposed the apartheid regime and encouraged the self-empowerment of black people.
His philosophies spurred thousands of young black people into political activism. - Sapa
