Pietermaritzburg - A bus accident in which four school children were killed in Inanda was shocking, the KwaZulu-Natal department of education said on Saturday.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with their parents, teachers and all those that survived this dreadful accident," MEC Senzo Mchunu said in a statement.

"We pray for calm and positive reflection during this very difficult time. May their souls rest in peace."

On Friday, four pupils from Mngomeni High School, in Umzinto, on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast, died when their bus plunged down a cliff in Inanda.

Netcare 911 spokespeson Chris Botha said 14 pupils were critically injured, 17 were seriously injured, and 30 suffered minor injuries. Mchunu said the department was "deeply saddened" as this was the second accident to claim pupils lives in the province in a short space of time.

"Just last week, we buried 10 learners who were involved in a horrific accident near Bulwer."
