Durban - KwaZulu-Natal's Safety MEC Willies Mchunu says the increased level of crime in Pietermaritzburg in August is a "grave concern".

Mchunu was commenting on reports that the Pietermaritzburg police station in the city centre saw a spate of crimes in the past month.

There were about 60 reported cases, including murders, assaults, sexual assault and rape.

Mchunu urged law enforcement agencies to work with all sectors of the community to turn the situation around.

"One crime is one too many and we strongly condemn all [crimes]... committed in Pietermaritzburg last month. The fact that violent crimes such as murder, sexual assault and assault continue to happen means we have to redouble our efforts to build a united front against all forms of criminality," he said, adding that police officers and communities must work together to combat crime.
