Johannesburg - A police inspector told the South Gauteng High Court how an informant severed ties with the police after informing them of officers working with drug lords to traffic drugs.
Testifying in court on Monday, Inspector Sizwe Sibeko said the informant, who cannot be named to protect him, told him that the police service was "corrupt".
"He no longer works with police... he said he wants nothing to do with the [SA] Police Services because it is corrupt," said Sibeko.
He was testifying in a case against three senior West Rand officers accused of seizing drugs trafficked into the country and selling them to drug lords.
The informant also told Sibeko that officers involved in the drug trafficking syndicate had threatened to kill Sibeko's family after he related the information to his senior bosses.
When the case continues on Tuesday, the State intends calling two more witnesses to testify in the trial of Senior Superintendent Dumisani Jwara, 43, Captain Landro Mokgosani and Captain Victor Jwili, 38.
Sold cocaine
The three pleaded not guilty to 13 charges against them on Monday morning, but did not enter plea explanations.
The drug trafficking charges relate to an incident in 2005 when they allegedly sold 40 bullets of cocaine for R80 000 in cash. The exchange allegedly happened in Hillbrow.
Another transaction involving a similar drug happened on October 3, 2007 when the three men allegedly stole 198kg of cocaine from OR Tambo International airport and sold it for R1 425 000.
Six days later, the men allegedly attempted to steal 5.7kg of cocaine from the same airport, but failed.
Other charges against the three men include fraud, attempted theft, racketeering and defeating the ends of justice.
The fourth accused, Captain Sakhepi Caiphus Shange, died in police custody in July.
