Johannesburg - Several government infrastructure projects are nearing completion, the presidency said on Wednesday.

"The intensive focus on infrastructure has yielded results and many projects have either been completed or are nearing completion," it said.

"Government has begun a programme of officially opening those projects that have neared completion."

National Infrastructure Plan

President Jacob Zuma launched the National Infrastructure Plan last year.

The presidency said Zuma opened the R81 road in Limpopo, which linked Polokwane and Giyani, on Tuesday. Last month he re-opened the Grootvlei power station in Mpumalanga.

"He will also be visiting other communities to open projects that have either been completed or are nearing completion."

Ministers were also opening projects.

"The minister of basic education, Ms Angie Motshekga... is leading a programme of opening one school a week in the Eastern Cape. New schools have been constructed, replacing mud schools."

One of the features of the infrastructure plan is the creation of the Presidential Infrastructure Co-ordinating Commission, which is chaired by Zuma.

One of the commission's goals is to develop a 20-year framework, beyond one administration, to avoid delaying infrastructure roll-out.
