Durban - An injured hiker was rescued on Saturday morning in the Cathedral Peak area of the Drakensberg, KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services said.

"A 19-year-old man... is believed to have slipped and fallen about 3m and then tumbled about 30m down a steep slope.

"He amazingly came to a stop only about 2m from a cliff edge with a sheer drop," spokesperson Robert Mckenzie said.

Members of the group hiking with the man on Friday tried to help him but were unable to assist. They returned to the resort where they raised the alarm, said Mckenzie.

"By this time, it was late afternoon and the weather didn't permit a helicopter to fly in the area, so three members of the KZN branch of Mountain Club SA, hiked up to the man and assisted him during the night."

The man was airlifted off the mountain on Saturday morning and taken to the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital in Durban.
