Bloemfontein - Two inmates at the Mangaung Correctional Centre outside Bloemfontein, are holding a doctor hostage, Free State police confirmed on Monday.
Sergeant Thabo Litabe said he could confirm only that the doctor had been held hostage by the two inmates since 10:35.
The police task force and hostage negotiators are at the scene and attempting to defuse the situation, Litabe told OFM.
The inmates are demanding to be transferred to a prison in Gauteng.
Litabe told OFM a nurse was initially held hostage with the doctor, but she has meanwhile been released unharmed.
One inmate is doing time for rape, and the other for robbery, theft and unlawful possession of fire arms, OFM reported Litabe as saying.
The facility is privately operated by G4S, a British multinational security services company, in partnership with the government.
