Johannesburg - Inmates at the Groenpunt Prison in Deneysville, Free State, set part of the facility on fire on Monday, correctional services said.
"A unit in the maximum security section of the prison has been set on fire by prisoners," deputy regional commissioner Grace Molatedi said.
Prison officials called her around 17:00 to say there was a fire.
She was on her way to the scene.
Further details were not immediately available.
In November, police rescued a prison doctor who had been held hostage
for 20 hours by two inmates at the privately operated Mangaung maximum
security prison near Bloemfontein.
The doctor was freed unharmed about 20 hours later.
The nurse was let go much earlier into the drama.
