Inspector Frederick Andries Jacobus (Frikkie) van Heerden, 32, was a policeman for 14 years.
He completed his police training in 1992 and worked in Cape Town, before he was transferred to the Roodepoort police station.
He was attached to the crime prevention unit for four years before joining the Roodepoort dog unit in 1996.
Van Heerden received several commendations from the West Rand area commissioner for exceptional service.
Superintendent Mario Caroto, commander of the West Rand dog unit, said it had been a privilege to work alongside Van Heerden and that "good behaviour" was an apt description of his life.
He is survived by his wife, inspector Leonie van Heerden and two children, Frikkie jnr and Bianca.
