Polokwane - A Department of Labour inspector has been arrested for allegedly demanding a R20 000 bribe from a contractor in Polokwane, police said on Monday.
Spokesperson Mohale Ramatseba said the contractor had been awarded a tender to supply water in Mankweng, while the inspector was given the task of ensuring the contractor met all the labour law requirements.
Ramatseba said that when the inspector said that the contractor did not meet all the requirements, he demanded money from him.
The contractor then paid R5 000 and the police made an arrest on Saturday.
Ramatseba said the police had been working undercover with the contractor.
The inspector was expected to appear in court on Tuesday.
Police said anyone who had been asked for a similar bribe should contact Superintendent Dikonketso Mosena on 082 565 7842.
