Johannesburg - A case of murder is being investigated after a man was shot dead by a police officer in Davidsonville, Roodepoort, Gauteng police said on Sunday.

"They were attending to a complaint of domestic violence. They were busy talking to the complainant when the man... started to intervene," spokesperson Lieutenant Kay Makhubela said.

"He became violent against the police and it's where the policeman used his firearm given that interaction. After, the community members protested at the police station and police managed to maintain order. There was no further harm."

He said the shooting happened on Saturday evening. The man died on the scene and no one else was injured.

The matter has been handed over to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, who were investigating.
