Pretoria - A man from Garsfontein in Pretoria apparently chopped up his fiancée's expensive furniture and paintings with an axe after she threatened not to marry him if he did not stop drinking.
Police spokesperson Philip Likoantsane said that the couple had started arguing at about 18:30 on Sunday when the woman had asked the man to stop drinking.
"The woman told her fiancée that if he didn't stop drinking, she wouldn't marry him.
"She then got in her car and left," said Likoantsane.
The man, who is apparently a well-known auditor in Pretoria, then took an axe and broke a glass door of the house.
Likoantsane said the man then walked through his fiancée's house and chopped up every ornament, painting and piece of furniture.
The woman laid a claim at Garsfontein police station of malicious damage to property and the man was arrested.
The man was due to have appeared in court on Tuesday, but Likoantsane could not confirm whether he had or not.
Beeld was told by a reliable source that the woman now feared for her life.
She did not want to comment on Tuesday about what had happened.
