Johannesburg - The Golden Highway , south of Johannesburg, has reopened following a protest by residents of Vlakfontein informal settlement near Lenasia, Johannesburg metro police reportedly said on Friday.

But Jacaranda FM tweeted Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar as saying on Friday morning that the highway had been reopened for motorists.

"The protesters are violent and burning tyres. It is therefore not safe for motorists to pass," said Minnaar on Thursday evening.

"The protesters were complaining about not having electricity in the area," the police’s Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini told Sapa on Thursday.
