Johannesburg- The JMPD on Saturday said its Internal Affairs unit was investigating two metro police officers alleged to have assaulted a scrap-yard owner and his employees in Newlands, Johannesburg.

The alleged assault happened on Wednesday, said Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

"An assault charge has also been opened against the scrap-yard owner for allegedly assaulting the very same metro police," said Minnaar.

He explained that the metro police officers had gone to the scrap-yard for an inspection after having allegedly spotted lamp posts and traffic signs which were presumed to be property of the city of Johannesburg.

"There has been a lot of action against scrap-yard owners for illegally acquiring state-owned property," said Minnaar.

Neither the traffic officers nor the scrap-yard owner have been arrested.
