Japanese vessel pulled from Clifton beach

2012-05-18 15:59

Cape Town - The Japanese fishing vessel the Eihatsu Maru has successfully been pulled from Clifton First Beach on Friday, and is being towed to Cape Town Harbour.

Salvagers managed to refloat the vessel after a number of unsuccessful attempts since it ran aground early on Saturday morning.

The salvage team had welded a bracket into the longliner which could withstand the required pull force, after a tow line had previously snapped.

The fishing vessel was tracked along the South African coast prior to the incident and some are questioning whether the incident could have been a deliberate act.

It's a "long-liner", along with gill nets, one of the most destructive forms of commercial fishing. Sink the f*^%ing thing, with everyone who subscribes to this form of maritime butchery aboard.......

The man has a point. What does a Taiwanese fishing trawler want in SA waters?

      PumaFred - 2012-05-18 16:40

      Whatever

Sell the fish and the oil and then sell the vessel to pay for the salvage costs.

      Vaaldonkie - 2012-05-18 16:29

It was a fishing trawler. There was maybe like 200l of oil on board (if you don't count Diesel as oil).

      jaco.faling - 2012-05-18 17:42

Reportedly 90 - 110 tons of diesel. Think that accounts to a bit more than 200l seeing as diesel is less dense than water.
