Jhb cops to fight fireworks, booze abuse

2011-12-22 14:37

Johannesburg - Johannesburg metro police will enforce a city by-law to combat the misuse of firecrackers and alcohol this festive season.

"There have been many injuries to people and animals caused by the reckless discharge of fireworks, and alcohol abuse, over the past years," Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.

He said discharging firecrackers without the supervision of adults would be a punishable offence. Those carrying or drinking liquor at parks would also be arrested.

The time frames during which firecrackers can be discharged are between 19:00 and 22:00 on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

On New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, firecrackers can only be ignited between 23:00 and 01:00.

Minnaar said the contravention of this law would lead to the arrest and offenders would be issued with fines of between R1 000 and R1 500.

"Metro police officers will patrol the streets and parks to ensure the full adherence to this law."

Fireworks should be stopped by customs authorities when entering the country and only people with special permit to do controlled displays should be allowed to handle them! Not only is it dangerous and annoying but it traumatises thousands of animals each year!

100% Used to love setting them off as a child before I saw the absolute terror not only to pets, but to wildlife. There is plenty of urban wildlife even in built up areas. Birds that are roosting in trees are startled and fly off into the night in a blind panic, unable to see where they are going and end up breaking their fragile wings and die a slow and painful death. Try picture yourself and the terror you would face being one of these little creatures before you go letting off your fireworks.

Pulverturm:If only everyone had the insight and respect for earths creatures that you have, half the battle would be won!Yes they are thrilling to watch as a child and if each towns municipality had a controlled display animal shelters would not become over run. Problem is they say they are clamping down but right next door to my place of business they are being sold frrly and police stop there to buy!!!! This happens ALL over!

Headlines: Two teenagers arrested by the police, one for swallowing battery acid the other for eating fireworks. Police officials say they have charged the one and let the other off..........So rapists thieves and muggers can be safe from being arrested on those nights as long as they are niot drunk or letting off fireworks while commiting their crimes ??

At leaste they're trying! What r u doing to help our country keep safe? Yes, I agree that some cops dont do their work and most (if not all) r completely undertrained, but they r our cops and we need to respect them for going out their and (mostly) risking their lives to protect us. Lets give them a thubs up & support, as we wish others do for us.

A similar by-law was introduced in Bloemfontein. It was selective in that only certain areas like residential areas were targetted while other areas were exempt. Very little control was carriedoutand the cops usual excuse was they had insuficient vehicles/staff to investigate. On the other hand A blanket by-law was enacted in Kimberley where the entire city and peri-urban areas was covered. The police reaction was highly satisfactory. Fireworks in Kimberley can be used only if a permit is obtained and the premises where they will be used inspected for fire and animal hazards.
