Johannesburg - Four taxi drivers were arrested in Fourways on Wednesday for driving without driver's licences, professional driving permits and transportation permits, Johannesburg metro police said.
Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said ten taxis operating along William Nicol Drive were impounded, while 20 others had their disks confiscated.
"All 30 taxis were unroadworthy but we impounded those which were in a very bad state. Owners will have to pay R1 500 each to get their taxis back from the pound," he said.
Owners whose taxi disks were confiscated were advised to take their vehicles for roadworthy tests and warned not to operate until their taxis were repaired.
The arrested drivers are expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Thursday. Their bosses were each fined R500 for allowing the men to drive without permits.
