Jhb highway closed after crash

2010-08-01 07:50
Johannesburg - The N12 freeway east-bound was closed for several hours following a ten-car pile-up on Sunday morning, Johannesburg metro police said.

The accident occurred on the freeway between the Xavier on-ramp and Klipriver off-ramp shortly after 03:00, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.

About 13 people were injured; four people were seriously injured and nine others suffered minor injuries.

ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said: "It seems that one car was rear-ended and it rolled. Other five cars then crashed into the first two cars."

All four lanes of the freeway between the Xavier on-ramp and Klipriver off-ramp were closed while emergency workers cleared the road.

Two bakkies and five cars were involved and some occupants were thrown out of the vehicles when the accident occurred.

All the injured sent to nearby hospitals and the road was opened to traffic at about 05:00.
