Johannesburg - With a cold weekend forecast for Johannesburg, the city's Emergency Management Services said they were concerned about the possibility of fires as people switched on heaters to keep warm.

"[We] would like to urge communities throughout the city of Joburg to use their heating and lighting appliances like candles, paraffin stoves, [and] heaters safely this weekend to avoid fire incidents," said EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said on Saturday.

He said emergency workers would be on high alert, especially for any incidents which may arise in the 180 informal settlements around the city.

Four children had been killed in fire-related incidents around the city this week,

Two children, both 2 years old, were killed when their crèche in Hillbrow caught fire on Monday.

Another child, believed to between 6 and 9-years-old was killed in a blaze at Newlands on Tuesday while another child, died in Ivory Park outside Tembisa on Wednesday.

"[He and] his mother on Wednesday... suffered severe carbon monoxide inhalation while using imbaula [a coal burning brazier]," said Mulaudzi.
