Johannesburg - A policeman was killed and another two were wounded in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, on Monday afternoon, Gauteng police said.
Three men tried to rob a store in Hillbrow. One was arrested, but two managed to escape, Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said.
Officers followed one of the suspected robbers, believing he was armed. When they confronted him, he ran away. The officers chased after him on foot.
Another officer, 29, in a police van, also followed him and when he blocked his path was shot and wounded in the neck.
Two officers, in civilian clothes, followed the shooter with their weapons drawn when they were confronted by other officers who thought they were fleeing criminals. The two constables were shot.
One officer, aged 31, was shot and killed, and another, aged, 30, was wounded.
The wounded officers were taken to Milpark Hospital in a serious condition. No arrests had been made.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate would investigate.
